Letter formation is about much more than neat handwriting. It helps children develop the motor patterns needed for fluent, automatic writing so they can focus on communicating their ideas rather than thinking about how to form each letter. Learning correct formation from the beginning helps children build consistency, improve pencil control and develop confidence as writers. Repetition, modelling and multi-sensory practice all play an important role in helping these movements become secure.

Consistent language and movement patterns are important when teaching handwriting.
Encourage children to:

        Follow the same movement pattern each time
        Use controlled movements rather than tracing over repeatedly
        Practise little and often
